Es war ziemlich kalt, als wir Austyn Gillette in Tallinn bei der Simple Session trafen. Aber wir haben einen warmen Ort gefunden, um uns mit dem Habitat Pro über Contests, Quiksilver und seine Deutschland-Besuche unterhalten.

[Interview: Stefan Schwinghammer]

Hallo Austyn, du bist gerade mit einem Eisbrecher aus Finnland angekommen. Was hast du dort gemacht?
Meine Freundin lebt in Finnland. Deshalb kam ich rüber. Davor war ich zum Filmen und Skaten in Australien.

Du musst also immer nach Finnland reisen, wenn du deine Freundin sehen willst?
Nein, nicht unbedingt. Sie wird wahrscheinlich in die Staaten kommen. Aber ich komme jedes Jahr für den „Helsinki Hookup“ Contest nach Finnland. Ich war allerdings noch nie im Winter hier und habe noch nie in meinem Leben so ein Wetter gesehen.

Aber es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass du Schnee siehst, oder?
Nein, ich habe früher schon Schnee in den Staaten gesehen. Ich hab früher mit meinem Vater in den Bergen gelebt, aber dort war es nicht so kalt.

Man sieht gerade viel Lipslide to Switch Crooks und all so Zeugs. Das gibt mir nichts. Ich habe es versucht, aber es ist einfach nicht mein Ding.

Du skatest wieder bei der Street League dieses Jahr, besser gesagt, bei der X Games Street League. Du kommst also auch nach Deutschland.
Ja, ich werde Ende Juni in Deutschland sein. In München.

Wirst du nur in München sein, oder geht’s auch noch wo anders hin?
Vielleicht werde ich Berlin besuchen und mich dort mit Henrik Biemer treffen. Ich weiß es aber noch nicht genau. Wegen dem Terminplan der Contests reist man die ganze Zeit herum. Ich weiß noch nicht, wo es danach hingeht und wie viel Zeit ich zum Reisen vor dem nächsten Contest haben werde. Ziemlich straffer Zeitplan.

Also ist es ein ganz schön volles Jahr für dich?
Ja, garantiert ein voller Sommer. Das hier wird mein erster Contest in diesem Jahr. Ich bin für ein paar Wochen nicht geskatet, weil es hier so kalt ist und ich kein Skateboard mitgebracht habe. Ich hab gestern erst mein Brett bekommen. Es wird schwer werden, mit einem komplett neuen Board zu fahren.

Du scheinst nicht so sehr der Contest-Typ zu sein, aber du trittst bei einigen großen Contests, wie der Street League, an? Was gefällt dir an Contests?
Ich mag das gegeneinander antreten nicht wirklich, was es nun mal aber leider ist. Aber ich mag es zu wissen, dass wenn du gut bist, du möglicherweise jemanden damit glücklich machen kannst. Ich denke früher konntest du mit Contests nicht wirklich viel Geld verdienen, aber es wird zu einem größeren Sport im Allgemeinen. Deshalb ist auch einfach mehr Geld vorhanden. Ich glaube dass ist es worauf jeder hier aus ist. Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass niemand begeistert davon ist, von null Grad Außentemperatur in ein Stadion zu gehen um dort einen Contest zu skaten. Das klingt nicht besonders spaßig. Aber die Leute machen es, um Street Credit oder Competition Credits oder Geld zu bekommen. Was auch immer es ist, ich würde sagen, dass das der einzige Grund ist.

Neben den Contests hast du in letzter Zeit viel gefilmt. Den Quik Clip, Austyn Unlimited und deinen Cosmic Vomit 2 Part. Kommt bald ein neuer Part von dir? Oder was steht als Nächstes an?
Nicht das ich wüsste. Ich film einfach ein bisschen bis sich etwas ankündigt, oder eine Company etwas machen will und mir jemand sagt, dass ich anfangen soll zu filmen. Ich weiß es nicht, aufhören bei null Grad Wetter rum zu hängen und zurück nach Kalifornien gehen, wo ich skaten kann, das steht als Nächstes an.

Was ist mit Sml Wheels? Ist da ein Video geplant?
Es ist eine kleine Firma. Deshalb ist die Produktion eines Videos ziemlich schwierig. Ich schätze, Webclips ins Netz zu stellen ist alles, was wir im Moment tun. Ich weiß nicht genau, einfach immer wieder Videos hochladen. Ich denke nicht, dass es ein komplettes Video geben wird.

Wie kam es, dass ihr euch Willow ins Team geholt habt?
Der Typ, dem Small Wheels gehört, kennt Willow und hat ihn ins Team geholt. Es ist gut ihn dabei zu haben. Deutschland representen.

Lass uns über deinen Skatestyle sprechen. Du machst eine Menge Tricks, die zuvor niemand in der Art gemacht hat, wie deine Blindside 180s to 50-50 und sowas. Was ist deine Herangehensweise, wie kommen dir solche Tricks in den Sinn?
Ich schätze das kommt daher, dass ich versuche einen anderen Weg zu gehen. Ich weiß es nicht. Man sieht gerade viel Lipslide to Switch Crooks und all so Zeugs. Das gibt mir nichts. Ich habe es versucht, aber es ist einfach nicht mein Ding. Also habe versucht mein eigens Ding zu entwickeln und es war eine andere Herangehensweise, als einfach mehrere Tricks in einen Curbtrick zu packen. Ich wollte es eher simpel und anders machen. Es ist natürlich schwer für mich, damit weiter zu kommen, weil du einfach ein bisschen eingeschränkt bist, in der Hinsicht, was möglich ist und was nicht. Jeder macht immer größere Sachen und genau das ist das Schwierige für mich. Ich muss versuchen etwas anderes zu machen.

Was würdest du sagen, wie sich Skateboarding entwickeln soll?
Ich denke es wird machen was immer es will. Immer abhängig davon, wer darauf blickt, wer es ist, wird er verschiedene Dinge cool finden. Skateboarding ist gerade sehr vielfältig und es ist schwer zu sagen, dass die ganze Industrie gut oder schlecht ist. Immer davon abhängig, wer du bist, können dir bestimmte Seiten gefallen. Ich würde sagen, jedem das Seine. Ich weiß nicht wo es hinführt, hoffentlich irgendwohin. Hoffen wir das Skateboarding weiter wächst, weil es für jeden gut ist. Gut für die Firmen und für Leute, die gerade kleine Firmen gegründet haben. Hoffentlich passiert genau das.

Wenn ich wählen könnte, dann wäre das das Cover meiner Wahl. Ich hatte nur ein anderes Cover, aber ich würde ein Portrait von mir, auf dem ich den Mittelfinger in die Kamera zeige, vorziehen.

Wo wir gerade über Firmen und Firmenwachstum sprechen. Du warst ja auf Quiksilver. Die haben kürzlich ihr ganzes Team aufgelöst. Was ist da passiert?
Ich weiß es auch nicht. Ich habe vor eineinhalb Monaten einen Vertrag unterschrieben. Einen Vertrag über drei Jahre und dann informierten sie mich, während ich in Australien war, vor etwa zwei Wochen, dass sie das Team auflösen. Also ich weiß es nicht genau. Ich war seitdem noch nicht wieder in den Staaten. Ich werde erst wissen was ich mache, wenn ich wieder zurück bin. Bis dahin, keine Ahnung. Ich dachte nicht, dass so etwas passiert. Als ich bei Quiksilver, war haben wir über den Aufbau des Teams gesprochen und darüber Videos zu filmen und dann schmeißen sie alle raus.

Ich dachte die hätten sogar schon an einem Video gearbeitet?
Sie haben so ein bisschen an einem gearbeitet, bis sie den Filmer gefeuert haben.

Hat Strobeck das Video gefilmt?
Er hat eine Menge Stuff gefilmt. Sie haben ihn vor einem Jahr gefeuert und ab da schätze ich hat Quiksilver realisiert, dass die Sache durch ist. Aber es geschah alles hinter unserem Rücken. Ich wusste nichts davon, dass das passieren würde.

Angenehmeres Thema – hast du dein Monster Cover gesehen? Gefällt es dir?
Klar, wenn ich wählen könnte, dann wäre das das Cover meiner Wahl. Ich hatte nur ein anderes Cover, aber ich würde ein Portrait von mir, auf dem ich den Mittelfinger in die Kamera zeige, vorziehen. Natürlich ist das nicht sonderlich originell, aber ich fand es lustig. Es war ein cooles Cover, ich war gehyped. Biemer hat’s gerockt. Ich hatte nie sonderlich viel Coverage außerhalb der USA, deshalb war es cool, das zu bekommen, besonders in Deutschland, wo ich die letzten Jahre so viel Zeit verbracht habe.

Also magst du Deutschland und die deutschen Spots?
Ja, jedes Mal, wenn ich in Berlin war, hatte ich eine super Zeit. Jeder weiß, selbst wenn du nicht skatest, hat man dort eine gute Zeit. Ich denke, es ist sehr entspannt, jedenfalls soweit ich das sagen kann. Du kannst überall mit dem Fahrrad hin fahren, den Zug nehmen, Schwimmen gehen und es gibt gutes Essen. Es ist einfach schön, perfekt. Wenn ich mir Länder aussuchen dürfte, würde es auf jeden Fall ganz oben auf der Liste stehen. Australien oder Deutschland.

Hi Austyn, you just arrived with an icebreaker from Finland. What did you do there?
My girlfriend lives in Finland. So I came out. I was in Australia before this, filming and skating.

You always have to go to Finland when you want to see your girlfriend?
No, not really. She’ll come to the States, some like that. But I come to Finland every summer for the contest, the „Helsinki Hookup“. I have never been here in the winter. I have never been in weather like this in my life.

But it is not the first time you see snow, or is it?
No, I have seen snow back in the States. I used to live in the mountains with my dad, but it wasn’t this cold.

There is a lot of shit like lipslide to switch crooks and all this little magic tricks going on in skating right now, that don’t do anything for me.

You are skating at the Street League again this year, or the X-Games Street League. So you are coming to Germany as well.
Yeah, I’ll be in Germany the end of june. In Munich.

Will you only be in Munich or will you travel around?
Maybe I’ll go to Berlin and meet up with Henrik Biemer. I don’t know, it just depends. Cause of the schedule for the contests you are constantly traveling. I don’t know where I’m gonna go after that and how much time I’ll have to travel before the next contest. Pretty strict schedule.

So it’s a packed year for you?
Yeah, a packed summer, for sure. This here will be my first contest this year. I haven’t skated in a few weeks, cause it’s been so cold here and I didn’t bring a skateboard. I just got this one yesterday. It’s gonna be hard, riding a whole new board.

You seem not that much of a contest guy, but you compete in some major contests like the Street League. What do you like about contests?
I don’t like competing which is actually what it is, but I like knowing that if you do well, you can potentially make somebody happy. I guess back in the days you can’t really make too much money of a contest but now it is turning to a bigger sport in general. So there is more money. I guess that’s what everybody is trying to do here. I am sure they are not excited to fucking going from zero degree to inside of a stadium and then skating a contest. That doesn’t sound too fun. But people are probably doing it to get the street credit or the competition credit or money. Whatever it is, I would say that would be the only reason.

Besides contests you filmed a lot. The Quik Clip, Austyn Unlimited, the Cosmic Vomit 2 part. Is there a new part coming? What’s up next?
Not that I know. Just kind of filming till something pops up or a company wants to do something, until someone tells me to start filming. I don’t know, stop hanging out in zero degree weather and go back to california where I can skate is next.

Whats up with Sml Wheels. Is there a video planned?
I mean it is a small company. So making a video would be pretty hard. I guess just putting web videos up is all that we’re gonna be able to do. I don’t know, constantly putting up videos. I don’t think there is gonna be a full video.

Why did you pick Willow for the team?
The guy who owns sml wheels knows Willow, and then he picked him. It is good to have him. Representing Germany.

Let’s talk about your skate style. You do a lot of tricks, nobody did before the way you do, like Blindside 180s to 50-50 and stuff like that. What’s your approach, how do those tricks get in your mind?
I guess I get it from trying just to take a different path. I don’t know. There is a lot of shit like lipslide to switch crooks and all this little magic tricks going on in skating right now, that don’t do anything for me. I’ve tried it but it’s not really my thing. So I guess figuring out my thing was to take a different approach instead of trying to add tricks into one trick on the ledge. Do it more simple and in a different way. It is definitely hard for me to come up with that, just cause you are a bit limited, as far as what is possible and what not. Everybody is going bigger and that is hard for me. I have to keep up and try to do something different.

What direction do you wanna see skatingboarding evolve?
I mean it is just gonna do what ever It wants. Depending on who is looking at it, whoever it is, someone could think it’s cool. Right now, skateboarding is really diverse and it is really hard to say that the whole industry is shit or that it is good. Depending on who you are, you might like certain aspects. Different strokes for different folks I’d say. I don’t know where it’s gonna go. Hopefully it goes somewhere. Hopefully Skateboarding keeps growing, because it is good for everybody, good for the companies, good for people that have started little companies. Hopefully that happens.

If I would have any cover, that would be the cover of choice. I’ve only had one other, but I would like to have a portrait of me flipping off a camera. Not original to flip of a camera, but I thaught it was funny.

Talking about companies and growing, you were on Quiksilver. They quit their whole team lately. What was going on there?
No clue. I just signed a contract a month and a half ago. A contract for three years and then they notified me, while I was in Australia, about two weeks ago, that they canned the team. So I don’t know. I haven’t been back in the States since then. So only until I go back I will know what I’m gonna do. As far as that. No clue. Didn’t think that was gonna happen. Coming from Quiksilver, talking with them about building the team and doing videos and stuff and then they canned it.

I thought they already worked on a video?
They kind of worked on one but then they fired the filmer.

Did Strobeck film the video?
He was filming a lot of the stuff. They canned him about a year ago and after that, I don’t know, Quiksilver started to realize that they were over it, I guess. But, behind our backs, I had no idea that this was gonna happen.

Let’s talk abou something mor pleasent. Have you seen your Monster cover? Do you like it?
Yeah, if I would have any cover, that would be the cover of choice. I’ve only had one other, but I would like to have a portrait of me flipping off a camera. Not original to flip of a camera, but I thought it was funny. It was a cool cover, i was psyched. Biemer came through! I never had much exposure out of the US, so it was cool to have it, especially in Germany, spending so much time there going back and forth over the last few years.

So you like Germany or the german spots?
Yeah, everytime I went to Berlin, I had a great time. Everybody knows even if you don’t skate you have a good time. I think it is just relaxed as far as I’m concerned. You can ride your bike everywhere, take the train, go swimming, good food. It is just great, it is ideal. As far as I can choose countries it would definitely be on the top list. For sure, Australia or Germany.
